Review by DAReezan:
Get ready to “Get your game on!” with the first game game in the Tag Force series: Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force.
Story:
You play as a new student enrolling to Duel Academy, which is soon to hold the Tag Force tournament that will take place along the entire island. The game is basically divided into three parts with each part having a different goal for the player to achieve by a certain deadline.
The first part of the game spans along the first couple of months in the academy, where the player is tasked with finding a partner to team up with for the Tag Force tournament. This can be done multiple ways, one of them is by having a conversation with them at different times of the day. Whenever you want to talk to a character you will be given 4 choices: Duels, Hobbies, The Academy, or Rumors. The first three are randomly selected so that one can harm affection, remain neutral, or raise affection. There is a way to bypass this but that’s for you to know if you want to get into the game. The 2nd way to raise your affection is with the popular sandwiches sold at the dueling shop, giving the correct sandwich to the right person will raise their affection. The last way to raise their affection is by dueling them, beating your possible partners in a duel will raise their affection as well. Once you’ve raised someone’s affection enough they will ask you to partner up for the Tag Force tournament.Possible partners include: Jaden Yuki, Syrus Truesdale, Chumley Huffington, Bastion Misawa, Chazz Princeton, Alexis Rhodes, and Zane Truesdale.
As a side note: in the game, every Sunday is tag dueling day where you get to go tag dueling with one of your possible partners.
The second part of the game is the actual Tag Force tournament where you can pick one of your partners, as long as you have enough affection, and partner up for the remaining part of this portion. Players receive 10 GX Medals and have to duel other teams, either in Singles or Tag Duels, in order to get their medals. Once the player’s team has obtained enough medals they can move to the finals of the tournament.
There is a final part of the game but that’s for the players to find out themselves.
Gameplay:
If you know how to play YuGiOh, you’re all set to play this game. At the beginning you’ll be given a starter deck which can actually hold it’s own against some of the other decks. The game uses a DP system where you can spend DP in the Card Shop to buy card packs in order to create new decks or improve already existing ones.
You earn DP every time you participate in a duel and depending on your performance. You don’t necessarily have to win to obtain DP but you do get more when you’re victorious.
Note: Not all packs are available from the start, you unlock more packs based on what you do in the game. [Ex: Earning enough of Jaden’s affection unlocks the “New Hero” pack which comes with all of Jaden’s cards in it.]
Graphics:
The duel field is by far the best part about the graphics, every field spell is fully animated and when one of your partners summons their ace monster they’re given a little animation of their own. Outside of the duel is a free-roam map with 3D sprites which you can interact with in order to start a duel.
Note: You don’t necessarily have to duel your partners, there are plenty of other students and secondary characters which you can duel in order to get DP and receive a few extra cards.
